Many don't think of Illinois as having Cypress swamps similar to those of many southern states. Southern Illinois is full of surprises..... And beauty,
The day begins with a relaxed breakfast at the charming Davie School Inn, a beautifully restored historic schoolhouse in Anna. With the day ahead promising natural wonders and local history, it's an ideal place to gather energy before setting out on a memorable Southern Illinois adventure.
From Anna, the drive leads southeast toward the remarkable swamp-like wetlands of the Cache River State Natural Area near Cypress, Illinois. Here, visitors encounter some of the oldest living trees in Illinois—ancient bald cypress and tupelo trees, many over a thousand years old. Boardwalk trails wind through the swamp, offering an almost otherworldly experience as knees of cypress trees rise from still waters and towering trunks stretch skyward. The quiet and age of this place create a powerful sense of connection to the distant past.
A short drive brings you to Belknap Nature Center, a lesser-known but rewarding stop. The center offers access to trails that highlight the region's diverse ecosystems, from bottomland forests to upland woods. Interpretive signs and peaceful paths make this an ideal place to slow down, listen to birdsong, and appreciate the subtle beauty of Southern Illinois' natural landscape.
Continuing deeper into the Cache River region, the journey leads to the Heron Pond Access Area, home to some of the largest and record-setting trees in the state. A well-maintained boardwalk loop guides visitors through stands of massive cypress trees, their size and age inspiring awe. Reflections shimmer in the dark water below, and the stillness of the swamp is broken only by the occasional call of wildlife, making this one of the most serene and unforgettable stops of the day.
Leaving the wetlands behind, the route heads east to the historic Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis. Overlooking the Ohio River, this reconstructed fort offers a glimpse into early American frontier life. Visitors can walk the grounds, explore the fort structures, and imagine the strategic importance this site once held. The park's scenic river views and shaded picnic areas provide a pleasant change of pace from the swampy landscapes earlier in the day.
Before heading back, no visit to Metropolis would be complete without a stop at the iconic 40 foot tall Superman Statue and the nearby Superman Museum. Celebrating the town's claim as the "Home of Superman," this fun and nostalgic destination offers photo opportunities and a fascinating collection of memorabilia. As the day winds down, the drive back to Davie School Inn provides time to reflect on a journey that blends ancient natural beauty, quiet trails, rich history, and a touch of Americana.
